F1: Understanding First Contact and Measuring Procedures
Level 1 - 2 Credits
Understand first contact procedures in the funeral industry, including registering a death, coroner and procurator fiscal processes, and medical certification requirements. It also covers measuring human remains, professional communication, confidentiality and appropriate dress standards.
Learning outcomes:
- Learn the first calls procedure.
- Show a basic understanding of registering a death in the UK.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the coroner and procurator fiscal procedures.
- Have a basic understanding of doctor’s cremation certificates.
- Show a basic understanding of the medical review process in Scotland.
- Learn about measuring human remains.
- Understand how to relay information.
- Understand the standards of dress.
- Learn about confidentiality.
CURRICULUM
Learning Outcome 1: Be able to take the initial information which leads to the arrangement of a funeral
Learning Outcome 2: Know how to advise clients about the certification and documentation following a death
Learning Outcome 3: Know how to to take and record accurate measurements of coffins and the bodies of persons in the company’s care
Learning Outcome 4: Understand reasons for high standards of dress, appearance and behaviour in the funeral profession and the need for confidentiality

F2: Understanding Identification, Viewing and Personal Effects
Level 1 - 1 Credit
This module covers essential procedures for identification, preparing viewing facilities and conducting chapel visits. It also focuses on handling and recording personal effects with care, while providing essential support to bereaved individuals.
Learning outcomes:
- Learn about identification.
- Understand how to prepare the viewing facility.
- Learn how to conduct chapel visits.
- Gain knowledge of how to handle and record personal effects.
- Understand how to support bereaved people.
CURRICULUM
Learning Outcome 1: Be able to initiate identification (ID) procedures
Learning Outcome 2: Be able to handle and record the personal effects and valuables of a person coming into the care of the company
Learning Outcome 3: Be able to carry out pre-viewing checks and receive and assist bereaved visitors
Learning Outcome 4: Be able to signpost families to bereavement support
Learning Outcome 5: Be able to discuss with the bereaved the preparation of a person in the company’s care, with respect, sensitivity and dignity
